Just before we entered the lockdown phase I travelled down to North Uist to do a bookbinding course at Sollas Books. I had it in my mind to use some of my linoprints and collagraphs to create artist’s books.
At that time I had two exhibitions about to happen, one in Edinburgh, and had been working flat out to put together a body of work ready to take over to the mainland.
Sadly, Covid 19 put paid to my plans and I now have lots of framed work with no place to go!
However, the bookbinding course needed to be followed up before I forgot what to do. I have experimented and grown more confident in making my books and it has become a very satisfying project.
Some of the books are blank so they can be used as small sketchbooks or journals or for personal mementos. Many of the books are themed and contain my own prints.
I am currently preparing to take part in an Open Studios event on the mainland so I am hoping that these artist’s books will be popular alongside my new card designs and 2021 calendars.
Lockdown has had its compensations. It has given me a chance to experiment and try new ideas.
